Meltdown and Spectre Side-Channel Vulnerabilities

Kyle Shoebotham

Senior Manager, Technical Support • Strategy

This announcement provides information regarding the security vulnerabilities Meltdown and Spectre.

On January 3, 2018, the National Cybersecurity and Communications Integration Center noted two security vulnerabilities that affect computer processors: Meltdown and Spectre. This vulnerability has existed for more than 20 years and affects modern processor architectures, including Intel, AMD, and ARM.
You can learn more about the security vulnerabilities by going to either https://www.us-cert.gov/ncas/alerts/TA18-004A or https://meltdownattack.com.
Vendors have released patches that address the vulnerability. Installing these patches can potentially cause performance issues to Operating System performance, as noted here: http://www.zdnet.com/article/google-reveals-trio-of-speculative-execution-flaws-says-amd-affected/.
This performance impact is not caused by Strategy but is caused by the patches addressing the security vulnerability on the Operating System.
Strategy recommends that customers perform benchmark tests prior to and after installing the vendor-specific patches.
ACTION:
Contact your vendor for the Operating System-specific patch.
