KB485120: Messaging Services Kafka and Zookeeper services fail to start in MicroStrategy 2021 Update 2 on Linux

Andrew Geyster

Principal Product Specialist • MicroStrategy

This article explains why the "exec: java: not found" error is returned when attempting to start the Kafka and Zookeeper services. This article also provides a solution to prevent this error.

Description

When a generic Java instance is not available, both the Kafka and Zookeeper services fail to launch, returning an error ‘

exec: java: not found
’.

Without being able to launch Messaging Services, this also can lead to the Platform Analytics Consumer being unable to pass its health check.

Why is this happening?

The

kafka-run-class.sh
script that is used in launching the two services is missing the declaration of the
JAVA_HOME
variable. Without the
JAVA_HOME
variable pointing to the Java instance that is provided with the Strategy installation, the services will attempt to use Java from the User path variable.

Solution

To resolve the issue, the J

AVA_HOME
variable can be declared at the top of the
kafka-run-class.sh
file after the
!/bin/bash
declaration. The
kafka-run-class.sh
is located at
<install>
/MessagingServices/Kafka/kafka_2.13-2.7.0/bin/kafka-run-class.sh
.
The variable must be set to the
<instal.>/_jre
path.
For example, if you are using the install path
/opt/MicroStrategy/
, the variable would be set as
JAVA_HOME="/opt/MicroStrategy/_jre
".
