KB484180: Metadata manipulations against a Teradata database result in the error, "One of the characters or code point does not exist within the specified repertoire"

Qinyuan Ma

Quality Engineer, Senior • MicroStrategy

This article explains why an error is encountered when performing metadata manipulations against a Teradata database. This article also provides a workaround to avoid this error.

Starting with the release of Strategy ONE (March 2024), dossiers are also known as dashboards.

Description

Metadata manipulations, such as a metadata upgrade or project duplication, that insert Asian language characters may fail when they are run against a Teradata database. The following error appears:
One of the characters or code point does not exist within the specified repertoire

Case 1: Metadata upgrade failed with Teradata database

Why is this happening?

This is a database configuration problem that is specific to Teradata. The default value of the Character Set is ASCII which doesn’t support Asian languages. Thus, inserting Asian characters will return the error and end the manipulation process.

Workaround

Change the Session Character Set from ASCII (default) to UTF16.

On Windows

Change the setting via ODBC Data Source Administrator:

  • Execute ODBC Data Source Administrator.
  • Select the target Teradata DSN and click Configure
  • From the Session Character Set drop-down, select UTF16.
  • Click OK to save the change.

On Linux

Change the setting in the

odbc.ini
file:

  1. Locate the
    odbc.ini
    file under
    /opt/mstr/MicroStrategy/odbc.ini.
  2. Edit the DSN info for Teradata MD to set the CharacterSet to UTF16:
    CharacterSet=UTF16

Case 2: Metadata manipulations with emoji

Including:

  • Name a folder, report, or dossier with an emoji
  • Import a
    .mstr
file which contains an object named with an emoji
  • Import a package which contains an object named with an emoji

Error messages:
DSSErrors.log: [Teradata Database] (-5356) One of the characters or code point does not exist within the specified repertoire.
Error when trying to import a package which contains an object named with an emoji:

Error when trying to name a folder, report, or dossier with an emoji:

Why is this happening?

Teradata does not currently support emojis.

Workaround

Enable Unicode Pass Through (UPT). For more information, see the Teradata documentation.
Change the setting via ODBC Data Source Administration:

  • Execute the ODBC Data Source Administration.
  • Select the target, Teradata DSN, and click Configure.
  • From the Optional panel, click Options.
  • From the UPT drop-down, select the UPTON. The default value is Notset which means OFF.
