MicroStrategy Consulting Upgrades Retailer to Version 10.4

Starting with the release of Strategy ONE (March 2024), dossiers are also known as dashboards.

Objective

• Perform a successful upgrade from 9.0 to 10.4

 
Overview
A large Canadian home improvement retailer, was running on a legacy version of Strategy – 9.0. In addition to no longer being supported, they wanted to move beyond standard grid reports to give their end users more capabilities, such as visual insight and self-service.
This upgrade included a hardware refresh and new Linux environments. The Strategy Consulting team assessed their source systems and all embedded reports to ensure a smooth upgrade. Because they were on such an old version, they were first upgraded to 9.4, then to 10.4, for their sandbox, dev, UAT, pre-production, and production environments. The consulting team also connected their Linux systems and enabled a new authentication functionality. 
Despite a short timeline, Strategy Consulting successfully completed the upgrade of complex metadata before the customer’s holiday freeze. The upgrade has since allowed them to take advantage of new features and gain overall enhanced performance on report generation. They are now looking forward to exploring mobile options and moving to 10.10 for Dossier.
 
Lessons Learned

• When encouraging a customer to upgrade from a legacy version, raise the concern that they are no longer supported by technical support.
• In a load balancing configuration, ensure you work with the customers’ infrastructure, like firewall appliances, as they can be complex to configure.

• Boost user and/or functional adoption: With a more modern interface, more people are using the application on a more frequent basis. End users are taking advantage of the new features by customizing their own reporting for web.
• Accelerate Time to Value: The upgrade required a large overhaul and needed to be deployed prior to their holiday freeze at the end of the year. Strategy was able to ensure a stable, consistent migration through all environments without any major outages.
• Increase enterprise self-sufficiency: Strategy Consulting enabled their end users to become self-sufficient from their IT team by mentoring them on VI to ease the burden on IT for report creation.
