Overview
A Canadian communications and media company selected Strategy as their enterprise reporting vendor following a successful POC showcasing our mobile capabilities. Their existing subscriber dashboards built on OBIEE had performance, scale, and maintenance issues caused by inefficient design. They wanted the ability to deliver subscriber analytics content on mobile devices to their executives and financial planning analysis team. Strategy Mobile was a huge selling point in the decision to convert. The Consulting team was brought on to assist with the optimized conversion of their subscriber dashboards.
Twenty different dashboards were being powered by 1700 datasets with an average screen time load of 20-30+ seconds. The Strategy Consulting team worked with the customer to redesign the underlying metadata layer and physical data model to deliver a flexible, scalable, and high performance solution. This reusable metadata now allows their executives to interact with and analyze subscriber information and KPIs for better decision making.
This migration was delivered in five months, on schedule and under budget. The datasets were compressed to less than twenty in memory cubes to deliver streamlined, reusable, high performance architecture. The performance requirement was for all screens to open in less than ten seconds. Consulting exceeded this requirement with all reports opening in just 1-3 seconds. They saw the value we delivered and requested that Consulting take an active role going forward by providing architecture design best practices and oversight to promote consistency and quality of BI deployments across the business.
 
Lessons Learned

  • When converting from another BI platform, keep everything designed with optimal performance in mind to avoid the customer running into similar issues they had previously. Avoid the ‘lift and shift’ mentality.

  • Boost user and/or functional adoption: The customer now consumes information and generates insights on the go through their mobile application. The organized visual content and quicker load times has increased the end users’ adoption of the product, and led to talks of expansion to other departments. 
  • Accelerate time to value: We not only increased their time to value with the product deployment in just five months, but created immediate value to the end user through the 1-3 seconds for screen load time.
