KB441988: MicroStrategy Intelligence Server 11.0 fails to start on Linux with "MsiNetServer: Invalid Socket" error

David Currin

Quality Engineer, Senior • MicroStrategy

MicroStrategy Intelligence Server 11.0 will fail to start on Linux if IPv6 is disabled on the host machine. The error "MsiNetServer: Invalid Socket" will be displayed in Configuration Wizard and can be found in the DSSErrors.log.

SYMPTOM:
When attempting to start or configure the Intelligence Server in Strategy 11.0 running on a Linux operating system, the Intelligence Server fails to start.  In Configuration Wizard this can manifest when clicking "Next" after entering Administrator user credentials, as an instance of Intelligence Server starts in the background to make modifications to the configuration.  The error "MsiNetServer: Invalid Socket" may be displayed on screen or written to DSSErrors.log or both, depending on the situation.  When the error occurs during Configuration Wizard operations, the error will be written to the DSSErrors.log file that is located in the Instances/DUMMY_SERVER/ subfolder of the log location rather than the standard DSSErrors.log file.

CAUSE:
Due to a change that was made in Strategy 11.0, the Intelligence Server attempts to bind to sockets in both IPv4 and IPv6, and will fail to start up if either socket cannot be successfully bound.
ACTION:
Strategy is currently investigating this issue to determine how best to address it.
WORKAROUND:
Enable IPv6 on the Linux machine where the Intelligence Server is installed.  Consult the System Administrator for information regarding this operating system configuration change.
The Strategy internal reference number for the issue discussed in this Knowledge Base article is DE114921.
