KB484929: MicroStrategy Mobile versus Library Mobile

Holly Stevens

Product Marketing Director • Strategy

Want to learn more about Mobile Analytics? We’ve got you covered. This article will tell you all about our modern viewing app, MicroStrategy Library, and how it compares to our offering of MicroStrategy Mobile.

Starting with the release of Strategy ONE (March 2024), dossiers are also known as dashboards.

What's the deal with Strategy mobile apps?

First thing to note: it’s true. We do have two mobile app offerings: Strategy Mobile and Library Mobile. Internally, we even sometimes refer to them as the Red app versus the Blue app to make things easier. And yes, it’s a little confusing. In fact, today, customers are still evaluating the tough decision of when and how to move to Library Mobile to stay modern versus keeping their custom apps all on the older app offering. We’re here to help you understand the key differences that still exist between the apps and let you know what we’re currently working on. Overall, Library is almost the same, but has some unique offerings itself.
To start, Strategy Library is our modern mobile app that allows business users to view dossiers and documents all in one location. It's where we focus a lot of our strategic energy and current development resources. Strategy Library was rolled out in the 10.9 release, serving as the main viewing vehicle for dossiers. Though Strategy Mobile still exists in the product portfolio, note that you cannot view dossiers. This means that as we move our strategy forward, you will not be able to view dossiers or any new visualizations released with dossier in the Strategy Mobile app.

What is unique to Library Mobile and why should your organization use it?

  • Responsive Design: Library was built with the “build once, deploy everywhere” mentality. This means that you don’t have to build different versions of your dashboard, only one dossier that is responsive across all devices. In authoring, you can build the dossier with new free-form layouts, layers, and grouping that allow for all elements to be responsive on mobile. You can also hide specific elements from the mobile view. Not to mention, Library Web and Library Mobile have a more modern look. Learn more about Responsive Design.
  • Dossier Design: Unlike Strategy Mobile, Library supports dossier, which allows authors to design with free-form layout and everything that comes with dossier authoring. Authors can use free-form layout to layer visualizations or vertical scrolling to extend the canvas real-estate for various screens.
  • OOTB Visualizations: Dossier has introduced multiple new visualizations over the years including Modern Grid, Mapbox with custom shapes, multi-metric KPI Visualization, Waterfall, Sankey, and we will continue to push new, innovative visualizations to dossier and Library; don’t miss out on all of the new functionality. Library Mobile supports multi-selection, tooltips, and context menus.
  • Link from Text or Images with Contextual linking: Authors can easily add text boxes or images to the dossier canvas and add contextual links to push users toward more information.
  • Attribute-Metric Selectors: Authors can use the new Attribute-Metric selectors or dossier to allow users to change the attributes or metrics that appear in the grid directly. Many times, end users may want to limit or change their own data view.
  • Table of Contents: We’ve made navigation easier than ever. With Library, you can easily navigate through various chapters and pages of the dossier to get insights. Are you seeing a theme, yet?
  • Filter Panel: The filter panel allows you to narrow down or expand the data view. You can change the data view at any time and pin the filter panel if need be.
  • Bookmarks: Bookmarks are unique to dossier and allow you to preserve any filter selections and/or in-canvas manipulations. With 2021 GA, bookmarks are now shareable. Bookmarks with dossier are very similar to Personal Views in documents.
  • Export to PDF and Export Grid to Excel: Users can very easily export and page or visualization to PDF for easy access. Library Mobile will then store those PDFs in the new Downloads folder of the Sidebar menu (2021 GA). Library also supports the Excel export of grid data from the dossier page, making it easier than ever to continue analysis.
  • Show Data in Context Menu (More Accessible): With Library Mobile, end users are able to right-click to view the context menu and select Show Data. It’s an easy entry point that allows users to see the underlying data for any visualization.
  • Collaboration: Collaboration is an element of the Library that allows users to communicate on dossiers or documents. Comments allow you to make “posts” on the general dossier while Discussions allow users to start direct or group discussions. All functionality related to Collaboration, including Invite Users or Share Link is also unique to Library Mobile.
  • Sidebar Menu Navigation: With 2021 GA, Library Mobile also now has a unique Sidebar navigation menu that allows end users to favorite content and create custom content groups (i.e. Finance, Sales). Library Mobile also has a Downloads folder that saves multiple versions of PDFs, Excels, and .mstr files for further analysis, comparison, or sharing. Library iOS even allows you to download and view Excels all within the app, optimizing the entire download workflow.

Strategy Mobile FeatureLibrary Mobile StatusUse a document as the Home screen of the Mobile app for customization

Available now.

We’ve released the ability to use a dossier or document as Home screen in Library iOS with 2021 GA. You can hide specific navigation icons and collapse the navigation bar.

Caching content for offline use

Available now.

Library Mobile iOS supports Predictive Caching and Automatic Refresh for dossier, which allows for seamless data updates across mobile devices. Learn more. Although Predictive Caching and the mobile option for On-Demand download of dossiers will get you close to the current caching options of Strategy Mobile, note that Library Mobile does not support device cache subscriptions (or specific scheduled cache intervals).
Annotate and ShareSupported for documents.

With Library Mobile, you can easily view documents and select the Annotate and Share option to draw or leave comments on the document page. Once adding annotations, the user can share or save the document screen. Note that it's on our radar to support this in dossier.

Filter Caching "Slicing" for Offline

It's on our radar.

Currently in Library Mobile, we cache the dossier content and bookmarks. This means that if the end user creates bookmarks, the user is able to view them offline (and online there is faster performance). However, we understand that a user might not know all of the data they need for offline use. We're working to provide the ability to user filters and/or select elements offline.

Panel Stacks

Available now.

Create panel stacks to give your users more ways to explore their data on Library Mobile.
Data Driven Push Notifications

 On our roadmap.

Currently Strategy Mobile allows for admins and end users to create alerts based on data thresholds. End users can create their own alerts if they have privileges to do so in Web. They cannot create subscriptions directly in the app. It is on our roadmap to bring this functionality to Library Mobile.
Using Mobile URL API and custom logic for URL API event processing

 On our roadmap.

Works with documents in Strategy Mobile; Library Mobile doesn’t support URL API(s). We are working to ensure critical linking workflows are available in the product. In the meantime, we suggest trying out contextual linking with dossier. In fact, with Library Mobile you can link to other dossiers or non-dossier content (URLs, etc.) from textboxes and images. Contextual links also pass filter and prompt context.
 Information Windows

 Available now.

Library Mobile supports Information Windows. Also check out HyperIntelligence to enhance the dossier viewing experience with both Web and the Strategy app.
 Transactions

 It’s on our radar.

So, what’s the deal with transactions? Great question. Library Mobile supports transactions in documents. This means that all of your documents will be working as expected but note that documents don’t have the same performance as dossiers. The offline transaction queue is currently not available for Library iPhone. We’re working to bring transactions to dossier.
