New Desktop Coming Soon!

Raghav Nyati

A new self-service data discovery tool is in the making. If you've upgraded to MicroStrategy 10.9, learn more about how to use a desktop client with your dossiers (previously called dashboards).

Starting with the release of Strategy ONE (March 2024), dossiers are also known as dashboards.
With the release of Strategy 10.9, we’ve taken a leap forward in our dashboarding capabilities by simplifying the user experience, adding storytelling, and collaboration.  We’ve evolved dashboards to the point that they are really more than dashboards - they are interactive, collaborative analytic stories. Ultimately, we felt that it was time to go beyond dashboards, both in concept and in name, and so we’ve renamed dashboards to ‘dossiers’.

In Strategy 10.9 all of your existing ‘Visual Insight’ dashboards automatically turn into dossiers, and you can view, edit and create dossiers in Strategy Web 10.9.

On the Strategy Desktop front, we’re planning on shipping an update to Desktop that allows you to open your existing dashboards as dossiers, edit dossiers and create new dossiers as well.  But we’re not quite ready yet, so the next version of Strategy Desktop is coming soon.

In the meantime, we’re making available an early adopter version of our unified content creation and management tool, called project Workstation.  Workstation has the ability to open your existing dashboards as dossiers, edit dossiers and create dossiers.  It also has more advanced functionality to connect to multiple Strategy servers, manage content and security, create data sets, and manage users and groups in the Strategy system.  While the upcoming Strategy Desktop will be simpler than Workstation, we invite you to use the Workstation Early Adopter build since it has all the abilities you need to work with dashboards and dossiers with Strategy 10.9. You can download the product from Strategy's Download Site - Look under the 'Feature Releases' section.

A few things to keep in mind:
1. If you are using Strategy Desktop today, and do not connect to a Strategy server, it is probably best to wait until we release the new Strategy Desktop.
 2. If you are using Strategy Desktop today and use it connected to a Strategy server, then:
       a. If your server is version 10.8 or earlier, you should continue using Strategy Desktop.
       b. If your server is version 10.9, then you should use Workstation since we don’t have a new version of Desktop available yet.
3. If you save your dashboards/dossiers in Workstation, then you will only be able to open them again on a 10.9 version of Workstation or Strategy Web 10.9.  It’s a good idea to make a copy of your dashboard/dossier (‘save as’ is your friend) so that you have a pre-10.9 version at hand if you need it.
4. Workstation and future releases of Desktop will require that the Strategy Library is deployed in your environment in order to connect and share dossiers with a Strategy 10.9 and beyond server.
