KB484559: Newly inserted container in freeform layout is allocated to random X/Y values

This article explains why the newly inserted container in freeform layout is allocated to random X/Y values. This article helps you better understand and use this feature.

Starting with the release of Strategy ONE (March 2024), dossiers are also known as dashboards.

Description

Currently, when you insert a new container in free-form layout, its size is based on the percentage of the canvas size. Its position starts from the canvas’ left-top to right-bottom. Each new container has some pixel shift based on the previous one.
However, when enabling the minimum height setting, the size is not suitable if it is calculated based on the canvas’ real size, which could be really large if a big value is input for the minimum height. Therefore, we decided to use the canvas’ window size as the reference, which is based on the browser window size.
For the inserted position, we abandon the original logic because you cannot see the new inserted containers if you scroll down in a very long canvas. The new logic for inserted containers is:

  1. Insert new containers in the middle area of current canvas scroll view.
  2. Add a random shift on X and Y axis to ensure containers would not be overlapped if they are inserted at the same time.

As long as you are in freeform layout, new inserted containers are applied with this logic.

Steps for inserting containers

  1. Log in to Strategy Web with a user account with the Web Edit Dossier privilege.
  2. Create a dossier with some datasets.
  3. Convert to free-form layout.
  4. Select a page, enable minimum height, and input a large value.
  5. Scroll down to the bottom of the canvas and insert a new container.
  6. The new inserted container displays on the middle area of the current canvas scroll view.
  7. Insert some more containers. These new inserted containers do not overlap.
