KB484089: No data is returned for aggregate from base metric when a filter is on derived elements

Liheng Ding

Software Engineer, Senior • MicroStrategy

This article address the missing data caused by the filter applied on the derived elements. This article also provides a solution to avoid the loss of data.

Starting with the release of Strategy ONE (March 2024), dossiers are also known as dashboards.

SYMPTOM:

When using an aggregate from base (AFB) metric and a filter is applied on derived elements, no data is returned.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE

The following example uses the Strategy Tutorial Warehouse that is shipped with Strategy products.

  • In Strategy Web, create a new dossier.
  • In the Datasets panel, click New Data > Databases > Select Tables. Click Next.
  • Add the CITY_CTR_SLS dataset and import as “In-Memory."
  • Add the CUSTOMER_SLS dataset and import as "In-Memory."

  • In the dataset “CITY_CTR_SLS,” create a simple derived attribute.
  • Create a derived element based on the derived attribute.
The following is an example which creates a derived attribute based on "Call Ctr Id."

  • In the dataset “CITY_CTR_SLS,” create an AFB metric and add a metric qualification using the attribute “Customer Id” in the other dataset.
The following is an example of a derived metric created based on the metric “Tot Cost."

  • Drag the “AFB Metric” onto the grid and add a filter on “DA(Group)." You can see there is no data returned for the view.

CAUSE

This is a known defect in Strategy 2019. The new features expose a problem with the server engine when dealing with AFB metrics.

ACTION

This issue has been fixed in Strategy 2020 Update 1 and above. To pick up the fix, enable project level setting "Data Engine Version" to 2020. This property can only be enabled through Workstation. For more details on enabling the setting, refer to Change Data Engine Version.

GLOSSARY

Aggregate from base(AFB) metric Uses the attributes on the dataset, or the base, when dynamic .aggregation is triggered
Derived element  A grouping of attribute elements on a report

Strategy internal reference number for this technical note is KB484089 and DE151153.
