KB486164: "Null pointer exception" error appears when running a report against a Google BigQuery data source, in MicroStrategy 2021 Update 9 or 10

Vanessa Munoz

Cloud Support Expert I • MicroStrategy

This article describes an error that appears when running some queries against a Google BigQuery database. This particular issue will occur when retrieving a large amount of data if Storage API is enabled.

SYMPTOM:
When running a report or any SQL queries against a Google BigQuery database, if there is a large amount of data to be retrieved and Storage API is enabled, the following error appears:
JdbcResultWrapper::Fetch failed.
Error type: Jdbc error. Jdbc operation attempted: FetchTable. [HY000:0: on SQLHANDLE] [Strategy][JDBC](11380) Null pointer exception.
This happens only when using the JDBC driver for Google BigQuery.
CAUSE:
This is a known issue with Google BigQuery JDBC connector 1.4.1. In some cases, when a table has unicode column names, the HTAPI will throw a Null Pointer exception.
ACTION:
This issue has been fixed in Strategy Update 11, where a new version of the JDBC driver has been released. Update to this version to take advantage of the fix.
