KB442025: PDF Exports of VI/Dossier with custom visualizations fail with XMLHttpRequest Exception 101 in MicroStrategy Secure Enterprise 10.6 and later

Justin Parks

Principal Product Specialist • MicroStrategy

The following article describes one possible cause for exports of VI/Dossier failing with the new PDF Export Engine in MicroStrategy 10.6 and newer releases.

Starting with the release of Strategy ONE (March 2024), dossiers are also known as dashboards.
SYMPTOM
When exporting VI/Dossiers to PDF in Strategy 10.6 and newer, the operation may fail with the following error in the resulting PDF output or in the NewExportEngine.log file:

Failed to display visualization: <Visualization> because failed to get pluginsVisList from <Web Server>
Failed due toError: NETWORK_ERR: XMLHttpRequest Exception 101

The issue only effects PDF exports of VI/Dossier with visualizations that need to be fetched from the Web Server.
CAUSE
One possible cause of this error is related to Cross Origin Resource Sharing (CORS) not being enabled which will cause the request to fail with Exception 101(INVALID_ACCESS_ERR). The New Export Engine hosts its own Web Server to accept export requests from the Intelligence Server but needs to request Visualization information from the Web Server in some cases. As documented at https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/API/XMLHttpRequest/Using_XMLHttpRequest#Cross-site_XMLHttpRequest, if the Web Server is not configured to allow requests from the PDF Export Engine's origin the export can fail.
ACTION
In order to resolve the issue, CORS needs to be enabled on the Web Server to allow requests from the PDF Export Engine. Details for enabling CORS for different Application Servers is available at https://enable-cors.org/server.html.
