KB484783: The MicroStrategy 2021 Update Installer

Muna Abdi Yussuf

Product Manager • Strategy

The MicroStrategy 2021 Update Installer includes fixes for important issues in the 2021 General Availability release. There is one installer for Windows and one for Linux, the same as the platform installers.

Description

Strategy 2021 Update Installer provides customers with a simple and centralized solution for applying critical fixes to the Strategy 2021 Platform Release. The Windows and Linux installer will identify which Strategy components and version are present for each machine and only apply the necessary update. The previous version of the Strategy 2021 Update Installer (v11.3.01) addressed the following issues:

  • DE190640 – The shared links functionality in certain scenarios where privileges do not exist do not work as expected.
  • DE191690 – Introduces whitelist capability providing additional access control for gateways based on the Community Connector framework.
    Learn more about How to Deploy the Community Connectors War File and the new whitelist feature for Community Connectors.
  • DE191395 – For Salesforce ODBC/JDBC Gateway only, using dates and strings with valid dates format on SQL statements may lead to an execution error. To learn more, see KB484828.
  • DE191400 – For Salesforce ODBC/JDBC Gateway only, SQL statements using LEFT OUTER or RIGHT OUTER JOIN may not return tuples hence the cell data is null. To learn more, see KB484830.

The current version of the Strategy 2021 Update Installer is 2021U1P1 (v11.3.1.1). The disk space requirements for the Update Installer are as follows:
Windows 11.3.1.1 Update Installer

  • Disk Space Usage: 2.3 GB
  • Installer Zip Size: 468 MB
  • Installer Extracted Size: 473 MB

Linux 11.3.1.1 Update Installer

  • Disk Space Usage: 377 MB
  • Installer Zip Size: 808.5 MB
  • Installer Extracted Size: 951 MB

This latest version of the Update Installer contains fixes for the following issues:

  • DE199595 – In Strategy Web, the ability to change preferences from Default Save Button Behavior to Save As does not work as expected.
  • DE199362 – In Strategy Web, the users or groups do not show up in the ACLs search as expected.
    Learn more about how to deploy MicroStrategy Web with Tomcat on Windows and Linux.
  • DE200109 – On a Windows machine, non-admin users can access the Web and Mobile Admin page.

Note: To run the Update Installer on Windows, stop the Intelligence Server service, close all Strategy applications, and stop Internet Information Services (IIS). If you have closed all the Strategy applications and are still receiving an error message, Service Manager may be running in the background. Go to Task Manager to close the task or use the service tray to exit out of the application to proceed.
The Strategy 2021 Update Installer can run on any supported Strategy version and contains logic to determine whether individual fixes need to be applied. Information about which updates were installed, and the success of that update installation will be written to the installation log.
As long as the existing

install.log
from the last installation has not been deleted or moved, users can expect this same
install.log
to be updated with the changes that are being applied by the update installer. Furthermore, a new
updates.txt
file will now be created within the same directory that the
install.log
is found to help simplify what changes are being applied. By default, the log files will be created in the following directories:

  • Windows:
    • 32-bit Windows environments:
      C:\Program Files\Common Files\Strategy\install.log
    • 64-bit Windows environments:
      C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Strategy\install.log
  • Linux:
    <MSTR_LOG_PATH>/install.log

To understand the format of the

updates.txt
 file, let's take a look at an example below.
There is a Red Hat Linux machine that is being upgraded to run on Strategy 2021. After running the Strategy 2021 Update Installer on this machine successfully, the
updates.txt
contains the following:

[2021GA]
Applicable=FALSE
UpdatedIServer_DE190640=FALSE
UpdatedSalesForce_DE191400_DE191395=FALSE
UpdatedConnector_DE191690=FALSE

[2021U1P1]
Applicable=FALSE
UpdatedZDirectory_DE198948=FALSE
UpdatedClient_DE199362_DE199595=FALSE

The DE##### is the identifying value for the fix that is used by Strategy Support and Technology for tracking purposes.
