KB442363: The MicroStrategy Listener service fails to start with "BaseException::RegistrySubKeys::OpenSubKey"

Justin Parks

Principal Product Specialist • MicroStrategy

The following article describes one possible cause of failing to start the MicroStrategy Listener service in MicroStrategy Secure Enterprise 10.x. A resolution is provided.

Symptom:
When attempting to start the Listener service on Strategy Secure Enterprise 10.x, the service may fail to start with the following error:

ka044000000kPh2AAE_0EM44000000RSLU.png

Cause:
One possible cause of the failure is that the following registry key is missing which is created by default on machines with the Strategy Intelligence Server installed but may otherwise be missing:
 Windows:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\MicroStrategy\Data Sources\CastorServer

or
Linux:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MicroStrategy\Data Sources\CastorServer

Action:
If the key above is missing from the registry, the service will fail to start. If the Intelligence Server is not installed on the system and the key is missing, The "CastorServer" key can be added to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MicroStrategy\Data Sources\" without any subkeys. If the key is missing and the Intelligence Server is installed it should be configured via Configuration Wizard which will populate the key/subkey.
