KB484188: The contents of a textbox with a border gets cut off in MicroStrategy 2020 due to the new calculation logic for outer borders

Doris Dai

Quality Engineer, Senior • MicroStrategy

This article explains why the contents of a textbox gets cut off when an outer border is applied in MicroStrategy 2020. This article also provides a workaround to avoid this behavior.

Starting with the release of Strategy ONE (March 2024), dossiers are also known as dashboards.

Description

When viewing a dossier in Strategy 2020, you may notice that the content in the textbox is cut off at the bottom when an outer border is applied. However, when viewing the same dossier in Strategy 2019, the unwanted behavior is not observed.
This behavior can been in the the following screenshots of the text, 注力, in Strategy 2020.
In Strategy 2019:

In Strategy 2020:

Why is this happening?

The change in behavior is caused by a defect fix in the Strategy 2020 release. In the fix, the calculation logic of the outer border size has been improved, affecting all containers and visualizations.
In Strategy 2019 and prior versions, the thickness of the outer border is a hardcoded value. However, the actual outer border size differs in different web browsers due to the conversion ratio between pt and px. The hardcoded border value leads to different container/visualization sizes across different browsers.
In Strategy 2020, the issue was addressed and fixed for consistent container/visualization size behavior on different web browsers. After the fix, the container body size is reduced by 1-2 px on both the height and width. This explains why the content in the textbox may get cut off if you keep the same text size.

Workaround

The following are suggestions to avoid this behavior:

  • Make some changes to the textbox size (only 1-2 px adjustment is needed)
  • Modify the text size in the textbox
  • Change the thickness of the outer border container
