KB484287: The filter button does not appear in dossiers without Web Edit privileges in MicroStrategy 2020

Yanping Chen

Quality Engineer, Principal • MicroStrategy

This article explains why the filter button in a dossier does not appear for a user without the Web Edit privilege. This article also provides a workaround to avoid this behavior.

Starting with the release of Strategy ONE (March 2024), dossiers are also known as dashboards.

Description

In dossier authoring, if you do not have the “Web Edit Dossier” privilege, you cannot see the filter button in the toolbar while in presentation mode and if the author previously saved the dossier with the Filter Panel hidden.
In Strategy 10.4, dossiers in presentation mode didn’t have a toggling filter button in the toolbar to control the on/off state of the Filter Panel. If the author decided to hide the Filter Panel in edit mode, consumer users would not see the Filter Panel in presentation mode, and would not have the ability to unhide it. Only users with the “Web Edit Dossier” privilege could switch to the edit mode and unhide the Filter Panel from there.
In Strategy 2019, a filter button was exposed in the toolbar when viewing dossiers in presentation mode, which allows you to hide/show the Filter Panel. However, this filter button was not controlled by any privilege. This caused a perceived regression issue, where users pointed out that consumer users were now able to unhide the Filter Panel by clicking on the new filter button, even though they didn’t have the privilege to edit the dossier.
To solve this regression issue and make the behavior consistent with Strategy 10.4, we associated the visibility of this toggling filter button for presentation mode with the “Web Edit Dossier” privilege and with the status of the Filter Panel when the author saved the dossier. That is, if the author saved the dossier with the Filter Panel open, consumer users with or without “Web Edit Dossier” can see the filter button in presentation mode and toggle it freely. However, if the author saved the dossier with the Filter Panel hidden, only consumer users with “Web Edit Dossier” can see this icon and use it to toggle the Filter Panel open. This change was introduced in both Strategy 2019 Update 4 and Strategy 2020, and solves the regression issue discovered in Strategy 10.4. Unfortunately, the change introduces a behavior change from Strategy 2019, where consumer users without this privilege can still toggle the Filter Panel in presentation mode, even when the dossier is saved with Filter Panel hidden.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Log in to Strategy Web with a user account with the Web Edit Dossier privilege,
  2. Create dossier.
  3. Add a selector in the Filter Panel.
  4. Hide the Filter Panel in edit mode.
  5. Save the dossier and log out of the project.
  6. Log back in with a user without the Web Edit Dossier privilege. For example, a user with only the Client Reporter privilege.
When the dossier is opened, the dossier will be in Presentation mode. The user cannot see the filter panel, and the filter button is hidden.

Workaround

Dossier authors should save the dossier with the Filter Panel open, only if they want consumers without the “Web Edit Dossier” privilege to have the ability to view and toggle the Filter Panel.
