KB439424: Unable to Republish Dashboard built in Desktop with In-Memory Cube after Uploading to MicroStrategy Web 10.x

Caitlin Corrigan

Senior Education Developer • Strategy

This article describes a known limitation where users are unable to republish a data import intelligent cube for dashboards or dossiers that were created in MicroStrategy Analytics Desktop with an In-Memory data set and a DSNless connection after being imported into MicroStrategy Web 10.x.

Starting with the release of Strategy ONE (March 2024), dossiers are also known as dashboards.
SYMPTOM:
After users create a dashboard or dossier in Strategy Analytics Desktop with a DSNless connection and In-Memory dataset, the file can be imported into Strategy Web using the “Upload Strategy File” option.
When users try to republish the cube for the dashboard or dossier, they encounter the following error:

Sample Error from the DSSErrors log:
"We could not obtain the data because the database connection or warehouse table is changed. Encountered error: Connect failed. Login failed. Error type: Odbc error. Odbc operation attempted: SQLDriverConnect. [HY000:0; on SQLHANDLE][Strategy][ODBC Oracle Wire Protocol driver]Insufficient information to connect to the data source.”
STEPS TO REPRODUCE:

  1. Open Strategy Analytics Desktop.
  2. Select “Add New Data” and select the Database icon.
  3. Select any option on the second page (Build a Query, Type a Query, or Pick Tables).
  4. Select “Add..” from the left by Data Sources and create a DSNless connection (database type does not matter).
  5. Add any data to the dashboard and save.
  6. In Strategy Web, select Upload Strategy File and select the file created above.
  7. Either select View Dashboard after the upload has completed or select Okay and then open the file from the location it was saved to in Web.
  8. Click the drop-down arrow next to the data set and select Republish Cube.
  9. Select any Refresh Policy option on the next window and select Republish.

CAUSE:
This is a known limitation when users save a dashboard or dossier locally on their machine and then upload the file to Strategy Web.
ACTION:
Currently this issue is still being reviewed for feasibility by our Technology team and it is not scoped for any upcoming scheduled Strategy release.
WORKAROUND:
Dashboards and dossiers created in Strategy Analytics Desktop using In-Memory cubes can be shared with other Desktop users, who will be able to republish the cube and enter the credentials for the database connections.
Dashboards and dossiers can also be created in Web and shared with other Web users without needing to replace the credentials for the connection, allowing users to republish the cube without encountering the error.
