KB483720: Unable to upload large .mstr files in MicroStrategy Web (ASP) 10.11 and above

Jian Chen

Software Architect • MicroStrategy

This article explains why users may not be able to upload large .mstr files to Web (ASP) and provides a solution to resolve the issue.

Description

User is unable to upload a large .mstr file to Strategy Web (ASP) 10.11 and above.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Create an .mstr file that is 35 MB in size.
  2. Export the .mstr file.
  3. Upload the .mstr file to Strategy Web. The file does not upload.

Why is this happening?

The reason the large .mstr file cannot successfully upload to Web (ASP) is because the .mstr file is exceeding the maximum file size that can be uploaded.
By default, the maximum allowed content length, in Bytes, is 30000000. When a file exceeds this limit (exceeding 28.6 MB), the file cannot be uploaded.

Solution

To upload a large file greater than 28.6 MB, you must increase the maximum file upload size in IIS.

How to Change IIS Settings to Upload Large .mstr Files

  1. Open IIS Manager.
  2. Double click Strategy > Request Filtering.
  3. Under Actions, select Edit Feature Settings. The Edit Request Filtering Settings dialog opens.
  4. Under Request Limits, change the Maximum allowed content length (Bytes) to 60000000.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Restart IIS.

Workaround

If modifying the Maximum allowed content length value does not resolve your issue, it's possible the uploading process time limit has been hit. In this case, you must also modify the executionTimeout value.

How to Change the Timeout Value

  1. Open IIS Manager.
  2. Double click Strategy > Configuration Editor.
  3. Under Section, select system.web/httpRuntime.
  4. Change executionTimeout to 00.21.50.
  5. Restart IIS.
