This article narrates "Unspecified error" received when try to define derived attribute based on the smart level metric in Dossier in MicroStrategy 2021 Update 5.2 is due to a known issue. A workaround is available in the current document. A code fix for this issue is not available in current releases but is being reviewed for a future MicroStrategy release.

Starting with the release of Strategy ONE (March 2024), dossiers are also known as dashboards.
SYMPTOM:

In Strategy 2021 update 5.2, "Unspecified error" received when try to define derived attribute based on the smart level metric as shown below:

ka0PW0000001Jm0YAE_0EM4W000005lIRB.png

Document execution fails. Error initializing data model from document instance, job 6725, Error Code=-2147467259, Error Message=System Error 0x80004005 (2147500037): --- Unspecified error
REPRODUCING STEPS IN TUTORIAL:

  • Create a level metric with following formula and check “Allow Smart Metric” as shown below:
    Sum<UseLookupForAttributes=False>(Revenue) {Region}

  • Create an intelligent cube with Attribute Call Center, Country, Region, and the metric created in step1
  • Create a dossier and add existing data by selecting the newly created cube in step2
  • Right mouse click on the level metric, and choose “Duplicate as Attribute” trigger the error as shown below:

NOTE: The “smart” means that Strategy SQL Engine will calculate the components separately and Analytical Engine will do the final calculation with the components. Therefore, “smart” is only meaningful for metric with multiple components. It’s the designed behavior that when a metric is defined by only one component, it will be non-smart metric and the checkbox for “smart” is grayed out.
CAUSE:

This is a known issue with Strategy 2021.
ACTION:

The issue has been fixed in Strategy 2021 Update 7, please upgrade to take advantage of the fix.

WORKAROUND:

Uncheck “Allow Smart Metric” for the level metric.
