KB484142: Visualization selectors do not appear for visualizations when importing in the MicroStrategy for Office add-in

Arkadiusz Zawadzki

Software Engineer, Principal • Strategy

This article explains why the visualization selectors are not available for selecting a dossier visualization for import in the MicroStrategy for Office add-in. This article also provides solutions to avoid this unexpected behavior.

Starting with the release of Strategy ONE (March 2024), dossiers are also known as dashboards.

Description

When importing a visualization from a dossier in the Strategy for Office add-in, the dossier visualizations appear properly. However, within the dossier, you may be unable to select one of the visualizations for import. Each visualization should have its own selector, located in the top left corner of the visualization.

Why is this happening?

After upgrading from Strategy 2019 Update 4 or 2020 to Strategy 2020 Update 1, you may experience this behavior. If you were using an older version of the Strategy for Office add-in on the same server and client configuration, including the PC, user, and Excel application, you may be unable to see the visualization selectors.
The Internet browser, or the Internet browser engine, used by the Excel application to display the Office add-ins cached one of the files responsible for the correct display of prompts and dossiers in the Strategy for Office add-in while you were using the previous version of the add-in. After upgrading, your Internet browser continues to use the cached version of the file, instead of the updated file from the server. Only the updated version of this file allows the visualization selectors to display correctly.

Solution

To resolve this behavior, you should clear the Internet cache for your given domain and application.

In desktop applications

For Windows:
With the Strategy for Office add-in open, hold Control and press F5. The add-in should refresh.
For Mac:
In the context menu of the Strategy for Office add-in in Excel, select Clear Web Cache.

In Office 365

For Windows (Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer, Microsoft Edge) and Mac (Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox):
With the Strategy for Office add-in open, hold Control and press F5. The page should refresh.
For Mac (Safari):
With the Strategy for Office add-in open, hold Option and Command and press R. The page should refresh.
If the above solutions do not resolve the issue, clear the web cache in the environment you are working in.
