This article outlines the difference between response.ini and setup.iss file and their usage in MicroStrategy Installation 10.x

response.ini

A response.ini file is an initialization file that is used to send parameters or selections to the Strategy Installation Wizard. This allows users to run it silently as all the options are pre-selected in that file.

A response.ini file can be created in any text editor and save the file as response.ini in the desired folder. It must be saved as ANSI encoding.

In the response.ini file,the parameters and options for the all the sections, including Installer, Paths, Welcome dialog box, Customer Information dialog box,Select Components dialog box , Installation Files, Usher Configuration,Strategy Web virtual directory,Strategy Mobile Server virtual directory,Health Center service account, Strategy Operations Manager virtual directory,Strategy MDX Cube Provider virtual directory,Subscription Portal virtual directory,Intelligence Server service account,Analytics Module setting, Start Copying Files dialog box,Strategy Installation Wizard Complete dialog box.

Starting from 10.4, there is the sample_custom.ini in the same location as the installation setup.exe. Replace any text between the angled brackets <> with the specific information.

USAGE:
To use the response.ini file to install Strategy components, Type the following command in the Windows command line:
Path\setup.exe --ResponseFile=”C:\response.ini”
Where Path isthe directory where the setup.exe file is stored.

To use the response.ini file through the Configuration Wizard in command line mode:
mstrcfgwiz-editor -r /home/username/MicroStrategy/RESPONSE.INI

setup.iss

setup.iss file is used by the Strategy Installation Wizard to perform silent installation.

A text editor can be used to create the setup.iss file with the following information; The setup.iss file must be saved as ANSI encoding.

[InstallShield Silent]
Version=v7.00
File=ResponseFile
[File Transfer]
OverwrittenReadOnly=NoToAll
[Application]
Name=Strategy
Version=x.y.z #x.y.z
represent the version of the product#
Company=Strategy
Lang=LanguageValue
[{8CCF3F6C-55B7-4A27-8C68-ADF21D0585A2}-DlgOrder] Count=0

NOTE:
The version in the setup.iss file must match the Strategy version to be installed exactly. For example, if installing version 9.3.0 must enter Version=9.3.0. Entering a version as Version=9 or Version=9.3.x causes an error when trying to perform a silent installation of version 9.3.0.

USAGE:
The setup.iss file is used in conjunction with the response.ini file for the silent installation. Use When both response.ini and setup.iss are included in the setup, response.ini overrides setup.iss.

To perform silent install, type the following command in the Windows command line:
INSTALL_PATH\setup.exe -LLanguageValue -ResponseFile="C:\response.ini" -s -f1”c:\setup.iss” f2”c:\setup.log”

In the syntax shown above, the – s parameter indicates that the installation is to be completely silent. If the -s parameter is not included in the command, then an interface is displayed during the installation that shows the progress of the installation.
