KB485094: What is the encoding method for export output in MicroStrategy 2020 and later and is it possible to change it?

Description 

The Export Engine only provides UTF16 encoding. As the Export client, Web and Distribution services have the option to change from UTF16 to UTF8. 

For Web Export

The report can be exported as a CSV with UTF-8 encoding by changing the preferences in Strategy Web. 

• Go to Project Defaults > Export Reports. 
• Select the Encode CSV for exporting to Excel option. 

For Subscription Deliveries

To configure Distribution Services to output files with UTF-8 encoding, the following registry change must be performed on the Intelligence Server machine. The following are instructions for 32 and 64-bit Windows and UNIX/Linux.

Windows (32-bit)

• In the Windows Registry, locate

  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MicroStrategy\DSS Server\Castor\.

• Create a DWORD registry key entry "

  DSNotUseUnicodeForPT

  " with the value data set to

  1

Windows (64-bit)

1. In the Windows Registry, locate

   HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\MicroStrategy\DSS Server\Castor\.

2. Create a DWORD registry key entry "

   DSNotUseUnicodeForPT

   " with the value data set to

   1.

UNIX/Linux

1. In the

   MSIReg.reg

   file, locate

   HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MicroStrategy\DSS Server\Castor.

2. Create an entry

   "DSNotUseUnicodeForPT"=dword:00000001.

Note: The Intelligence Server needs to be restarted for the changes to take effect.
