KB483330: What is the hidden VLDB property Row Governing for Costly Functions and how do I turn it on?

Marenssi Marenssi

Senior Cloud Support Migrations Engineer I • MicroStrategy

This article explains how to resolve an error that results from the hidden VLDB property Row Governing for Costly Functions.

Symptom

The property "RowGoverning4CostlyFunctions" is a hidden limit that was introduced in Strategy to prevent memory issues or crashes when many complex metrics are used at the same time. This property limits the maximum amount of rows to 80,000.
If you surpass this row limit, your metric values appear as null and the following error message appears in the DSSErrors.log:
"DE89740: The calculation of the R function is costly on the xxxxx rows. Skip the calculation given the row governing is set as 80,000”

Workaround

The following workarounds apply to Strategy 2019 and newer, as well as versions prior to Strategy 2019.

Strategy 2019 and newer

To resolve this error and its associated limit, disable the Parallel Execution of cube subset instructions (CSI) setting:

  1. Go to
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\MicroStrategy\
    and open
    FeatureFlags.PDS
    in a text editor.
  2. Search for Parallel Execution of cube subset instructions (CSI).
  3. Change
    <FLAGS STATUS = “on” ISDEFAULTON = “true” ISEXTENALFEATURE=“true” HELPURL=“” FEEDBACKURL=“”/>”
    as needed.
    Before:

    <DSSOBJECT TYPE="FeatureFlag" NAME="@@0x13B7!Parallel Execution of cube subset instructions (CSI)" ID="$ParCSIExec" DESCRIPTION="@@0x13B8" ABBREVIATION ="AE/ParCSIExec">
        <DISCLAIMER VALUE=""/>
        <FLAGS STATUS = "off" ISDEFAULTON = "false" ISEXTENALFEATURE="true" HELPURL="" FEEDBACKURL=""/>
    </DSSOBJECT>

    After:

    <DSSOBJECT TYPE="FeatureFlag" NAME="@@0x13B7!Parallel Execution of cube subset instructions (CSI)" ID="$ParCSIExec" DESCRIPTION="@@0x13B8" ABBREVIATION ="AE/ParCSIExec" UPDATED="10.10.00.00">
        <DISCLAIMER VALUE=""/>
        <FLAGS STATUS = "on" ISDEFAULTON = "true" ISEXTENALFEATURE="true" HELPURL="" FEEDBACKURL=""/>
    </DSSOBJECT>

Versions Prior to Strategy 2019

To resolve this error and its associated limit, disable the Parallel Execution of cube subset instructions (CSI) setting:

  • Log into Strategy Web.
  • Navigate to Administrator > Preferences > Preferences Level > Project Defaults.
  • Go to Features for Customer Feedback.
  • Locate 9. Parallel Execution of cube subset instructions (CSI) and from the Set feature status as drop-down, choose Off.
