Value
The new Card Authoring interface in Workstation is designed to make it easy for Analysts to create beautiful cards and share them in their organization. To keep things simple and intuitive, there are built-in templates, drag and drop functionality, and color themes. No coding knowledge of HTML, CSS, Javascript etc. are necessary to create useful Cards. Often, the ‘hardest’ part in creating a Card is identifying the underlying dataset on which the Card is built.
Existing ACL workflows are re-used in Workstation so that the owner of the Card can quickly share with end users without an extra learning curve.
Cards also support Certification by Certifiers, to mark them as being vetted and ready for production.
Requirements
The following are some of the requirements to successfully create and manage Cards from Workstation:
- Workstation, the Intelligence Server and the Library Server should all be version 2019 or above.
- There are no special privileges necessary to author Cards but to certify a Card, the Certifier privilege is necessary
- The underlying dataset/Intelligent Cube on which the Card is built should NOT be configured with Direct Data Access. This is to ensure high performance when consuming cards
- The dataset should be published in the locale of your choice before creating a Card from it.
- Use Permission on the dataset is required
- Execute Permission on a Card is required to open it from Workstation
- Write Permission on a Card is required to overwrite it with new changes
Action Steps
Create a new Card from an existing dataset.
- Determine a dataset for your use case.
- Ensure that the dataset is published in the locale of your choice.
- There are a number of ways to enter the authoring interface for a card. For all these ways, the dataset needs to be picked prior to viewing the interface. These are:
- File menu → Create New Card
- This opens the Select Dataset window where we can drill through folders and select a dataset
- Only Non-DDA datasets are displayed.
- Datasets on which there is no Use permission are displayed but cannot be selected.
- Selecting a dataset will open the Card editor with the dataset inserted
- Right mouse click on a dataset → Create New Card from...
- The card editor will be launched with the dataset inserted
- The context menu option will be missing for DDA datasets
- The context menu option will be grayed out if there is not enough permissions on the dataset to use it.
- The Plus button for the Cards smart tab in the side bar
- Same as the File Menu option
- Card authoring supports the following:
- Drag and drop attributes and metrics into the card
- 4 Out of the box templates
- Header background color and text color
- Optional footer
- Saving a card:
- Use the Save button inside the card editor or Save/Save As in the File menu
- Save is used to overwrite a card that has already been saved
- Save As is used to choose a location to save and give the card a name
- In the Save As window, only the environment the card or dataset comes from is enabled. If the Save button is Disabled it means there are not enough permissions on the chosen folder
Edit an existing Card with a previously chosen dataset
- Cards can be browsed using the Cards smart folder or regular folder browsing
- To open a card for editing, either double click on the card or right mouse click on it → Edit
- The Edit option is grayed out if there is not enough permissions to Execute it.
- To save changes, there are two options:
- Save to overwrite the existing card. If this option is disabled in the File menu, it means there is no Write permission on the card.
- Save As to create another card for which a new location and name has to be chosen
- It is NOT possible to replace the dataset while editing a card.
Share a Card
- Cards are different from other objects in that they do NOT inherit any ACL from their parent folder when they are saved. Initially, there is only one entry in the ACL - the owner of the card gets Full Control
- Browse to an existing Card, right mouse click → Get Info
- Go to the Security Access tab
- To share a card with a user or group of users, add them to the list and grant them at least the following permissions: Browse, Read, Execute
- To give control of the security settings on the card to another user or group of users, add them to the list and grant them at least the following permissions: Browse, Read, Control
