Getting Ready for Java 21: The Strategy April 2026 Release

Scott Rowley

Director, Application Security Engineering • MicroStrategy

In the April 2026 release, Strategy is upgrading to Java 21. Self-hosted customers must run a JDK 21 compatible application server and all customers should review their existing customizations for deprecated Java APIs when upgrading to Strategy ONE April 2026 or later.

Strategy upgraded from Java 17 to Java 21 in the April 2026 release as part of our ongoing investment into the security posture of the platform. Strategy Cloud users should review their customizations, as the infrastructure update is managed automatically. Self-hosted customers must review their application servers and review their customizations when upgrading to Strategy ONE April 2026 or newer.

Reviewing Your Application Servers

Using Apache Tomcat 10.1.x or another JDK 21–compatible server listed in the Strategy certification matrix is required:

  • Apache Tomcat: v10.1.x
  • JBoss EAP: Certified versions for JDK 21 (including 8.0 Update 4 or above, and 8.1)
  • Microsoft IIS: v10.x

For more information and a complete list, please see the Certifications Dossier on this page.

Reviewing Your Customizations

Existing customizations should continue working with Java 21. Java 21 deprecates a small number of APIs and tools. Any customizations using these will need to be reviewed and updated. Cross-reference your tools with the official Java documentation:

  • Removed APIs in JDK 18–21
  • Removed Tools and Components in JDK 18–21
