KB489650: URL with file:/// protocol in blacklist is not allowed to be imported

Rong Yu

Quality Engineer, Senior • MicroStrategy

This article explains why an error is encountered when importing “Data From URL” using a file:/// URL that points to certain system locations.

Symptom

Importing “Data From URL” using a file:/// URL that points to certain system locations fails with an error:

Error in loading file from URL. Check the URL.

[Load file from URL failed. Error in importing files. Please check the file to import. Error type: Data Import Error. The URL is not allowed to be imported. Connection String: FILE:///BIN/;. ]

Cause

For security reasons, URLs using the file:/// protocol that match specific path patterns are blocked (blacklisted).

Windows:

Any path containing:

  • :/Windows/
  • :/ProgramFiles/
  • :/Program Files(x86)/
  • :/Users/

Linux:

  • /etc/
  • /bin/
  • /var/
  • /opt/
  • /proc/*
  • /home/*/.bashrc
  • /usr/local/bin
  • /usr/bin

If the file:/// URL points into any of these locations, the system will reject the import and show the “URL is not allowed to be imported” error.

Solution

  • Do not use file:/// URLs pointing to the blacklisted directories.
  • Instead:
      • Copy the file to a non‑restricted location and re-import from URL with new path.
      • Download the file and re-import from “File from Disk”.
