KB482874: "undefined symbol FT_Get_Advance" error when launching MicroStrategy GUI utilities in Red Hat 7.6

David Currin

Quality Engineer, Senior • MicroStrategy

When attempting to launch any MicroStrategy utilities in graphical mode on Red Hat 7.6, an error may occur due to outdated libraries in the MicroStrategy installation files.

SYMPTOM
When attempting to launch any Strategy utilities in graphical mode (such as Configuration Wizard, Connectivity Wizard, etc.) on Red Hat 7.6, the error "undefined symbol FT_Get_Advance" is output to the terminal and the utility fails to launch.  This may be noticed especially immediately after upgrading a Red Hat system to version 7.6, or when installing Strategy on a Red Hat 7.6 system for the first time.

java: symbol lookup error: /lib64/libfontconfig.so.1: undefined symbol: FT_Get_Advance

CAUSE
The issue is caused by a version mismatch between Red Hat system libraries that were installed as part of version 7.6 and other libraries that are provided out of the box with a Strategy installation.
ACTION
This issue has been resolved in Strategy 2019.  Upgrade to the latest Strategy version to take advantage of the fix.
WORKAROUND
In Strategy versions prior to 2019, the issue may be resolved by removing the conflicting Strategy libraries from the installation so that only libraries provided by Red Hat will be loaded.  Locate the following libraries in the Strategy installation directory (by default this will be /opt/MicroStrategy/lib/) and delete or rename them:

/opt/MicroStrategy/lib/libfreetype.so
/opt/MicroStrategy/lib/libfreetype.so.6
/opt/MicroStrategy/lib/libfreetype.so.6.3.10

After deleting or renaming the above libraries, the graphical utilities will open normally.
CAUTION: Do not make any modifications to other library files in the Strategy directory, or to any library files that are outside of the Strategy directory.  There will be other copies of libfreetype.so* in system locations such as /usr/lib64/; be sure not to make any modifications to these.
