KB484691: "Error retrieving token using the given the AppID and AppSecret" error is returned when executing ESRI Map in MicroStrategy Web

Yanqing Liu

Cloud Support Expert I • MicroStrategy

This article explains why a retrieval error is returned when executing ESRI Map in MicroStrategy Web. This article also provides solutions to avoid this error.

Starting with the release of Strategy ONE (March 2024), dossiers are also known as dashboards.

Description

When running a document or dossier with ESRI map, the following error message is returned.
Error retrieving token using the given AppID and AppSecret. [object XMLHttpRequest]

Why is this happening?

There are two possible causes of this error.

  • An invalid ESRI key is used and configured for Strategy Web.
  • When running ESRI Map for the first time, if
    clientToken
    is set to
    true
(as per KB202342), the client will send an HTTP request to fetch the access token from ArcGIS:
    POST https://www.arcgis.com/sharing/oauth2/token HTTP/1.1

If a parameter "token" is added to the request through customizations, ArcGIS will mistakenly take the value as its access token and return the error. Through fiddler, the following error from ArcGIS can be observed.

ArcGIS Portal Directory  Eror Invalid token. Error: 498

Solution

  1. Please follow the instructions provided in KB45064 and get the ESRI Map Key and activate the map for Strategy Web.
  2. If the
    &token
parameter is added to the following request, please check the customizations/plugins deployed for Strategy Web. You can either remove the
    &token
parameter or change the parameter name.
    POST https://www.arcgis.com/sharing/oauth2/token HTTP/1.1
