KB483612: An Attribute Filter Is Not Applied For A Conditional Metric

Community Admin

• Strategy

An attribute filter is not applied for a conditional metric when it is the only metric on the visualization.

Starting with the release of Strategy ONE (March 2024), dossiers are also known as dashboards.

Symptoms

  • Conditional metric returns incorrect values when it is the only metric on the Visualization.
    • An attribute filter is not applied, and the attribute in the filter is related to the attribute in the condition of the metric.
  • This issue is seen for data accessed in both Connect Live mode and In-Memory mode.
    • However, it is only triggered for In-Memory mode when the dashboard contains more than one dataset.

Glossary

  • Conditional metric
  • Data Access modes (Connect Live vs. In-Memory)

Steps to Reproduce

  • Open Strategy Web. We use Strategy Tutorial objects to build this example.
  • Create a new Intelligent Cube C01 with the following tables and relationships:

    • Save the cube in Connect Live mode. If you want to recreate this example with data saved with In-Memory mode, create an additional dataset and also add it to the dossier below.
  • Create a new dossier using the new cube.
  • Create a conditional metric ConditionalMetric with the following definition:

ka0PW0000001Ji0YAE_0EM2R000000m0az.jpeg
  • Drag Year Id and ConditionalMetric to a Grid visualization.
  • Apply an advanced qualification on the visualization with an attribute that is related to Month Id, the attribute used in the filter for ConditionalMetric. We apply a filter on Quarter Id and select only "20141":

Note how the attribute filter defined on Quarter Id is not applied. The grid still shows data for Year Id = 2015:

Cause

  • Attribute filters are not supported when there is only one metric, and it is a conditional metric.
  • This is only applicable for calculations that pass through the Multi-Cube Engine (MCE), a subcomponent of the Data Engine:
    • The MCE processes all data calculations when the dashboard contains more than one dataset, even if only one is used. Additionally, all calculations for data accessed via Connect Live mode are also processed in the MCE.

Solution

  • Upgrade to Strategy 2019 Update 1 or above. We recommend the latest version.
  • Set Data Engine Version setting to 11 or above.
    • The project level setting Data Engine Version can only be enabled through Workstation. For more details on enabling the setting, see Change Data Engine Version.
    • After changing the Data Engine Version setting, you will need to republish your datasets to see the changes.

In the new fix, Data Engine adds support for the conditional metric case so that attribute filters will be applied properly.
The grid in the example above should now return:
