KB484016: ANSI encoding is found for a text file generated by MicroStrategy Distribution Services while UTF-8 was expected

Mari Sugimura

Senior Cloud Support Engineer III • MicroStrategy

This article explains why the encoding appears as ANSI after following the suggested change from UTF-16 to UTF-8.

Description

Strategy Distribution Services generates and delivers text files with UTF-16 as the default encoding option. This behavior can be altered so that the encoding appears as UTF-8, rather than UTF-16. For more details, see KB209966.
However, instead of UTF-8, ANSI is found as the encoding option for the file generated.

Why is this happening?

This is an expected behavior. While Notepad or other text editors may have ANSI and UTF-8 listed as distinct encoding types, ANSI is a subset of UTF-8. In this particular case, there are no characters in the file that requires UTF-8.

You should note that UTF-8 is available when there are characters in the file that require UTF-8 encoding. For example, if there is a Japanese character in a report result, the file is generated with UTF-8.
For more information regarding character encoding in Strategy, see KB37611 and KB47073.
