KB484791: How to connect to SAP HANA in MicroStrategy 2021

Community Admin

• Strategy

This article provides steps for connecting to SAP HANA via DSN and DSN-less in MicroStrategy 2021.

Starting with the release of Strategy ONE (March 2024), dossiers are also known as dashboards.
Since the Strategy 2021 release, the SAP HANA ODBC driver comes bundled with Strategy Secure Enterprise. Now, you can connect to SAP HANA data sources right out of the box, without the need for complicated configuration. The Connectivity Wizard will ensure all required DSN settings are answered for proper functionality with Strategy.
This article covers the following topics:

  • Via DSN
    • Linux
      • How to create a DSN for SAP HANA in Linux using the Connectivity Wizard
        • Connectivity Wizard in the graphical user interface (GUI)
        • Connectivity Wizard in the command line interface (CLI)
      • How to create a database instance in Strategy using the DSN
        • MicroStrategy Web
        • MicroStrategy Workstation
    • Via DSN-less
      • MicroStrategy Web
      • MicroStrategy Workstation
    • Kerberos Authentication
    • SSL Encryption
    • LDAP Authentication

How to create a DSN for SAP HANA in Linux using the Connectivity Wizard

There are two ways to use the Connectivity Wizard.

  • In the graphical user interface (GUI)
  • In the command line interface (CLI)

Connectivity Wizard in the graphical user interface

  • Go to
    INSTALL_PATH/bin
, which by default is in
    /opt/mstr/MicroStrategy/bin.
  • Run mstrconnectwiz and the GUI should open if is supported on the machine.
  • Click Next on the Welcome screen.

  • Note:
Enable SSL will enable data transmission encryption without certification validation.
Only single hostname and port are currently supported. Multiple hosts can be configured by manually editing DSN parameters.
  • To test the connection, click Test and enter the Database username and password, and click Connect.
ka0PW0000001JemYAE_0EM4W000001KFaA.jpeg
  • If the connection worked, you should the see the following message.
    Connection test succeeded

  • Click Finish to create the DSN.

  • The DSN for SAP HANA has been created successfully.

Connectivity Wizard in the command line interface (CLI)
You can create the DSN using the command line interface with SSH protocol to the Intelligence server machine.

  • Go to
    INSTALL_PATH/bin
, which by default is in
    /opt/mstr/MicroStrategy/bin.
  • Run the command in the following format:

./mstrconnectwiz SAPHANA [Data Source Name] [hostname] [-port:port] [-EnableSSL:0/1]

    For example:

    ./mstrconnectwiz SAPHANA SapHanaDsn 192.168.1.1 -port:30015 -EnableSSL:1

ka0PW0000001JemYAE_0EM4W000001KFkF.jpeg
  • EnableSSL is a boolean value, so use
    1
    to enable SSL and
    0
to disable SSL. To find out more, use the following command:

    ./mstrconnectwiz help

Kerberos Authentication

Kerberos authentication is not supported by the driver bundled out of the box by the Strategy installer.
To configure Kerberos authentication with SAP HANA, the system administrator needs to manually download (e.g., from SAP Launchpad) and install the SAP HANA client, and follow the instructions linked below.
Strategy supports Single Sign-On (SSO) access to SAP HANA using Kerberos when the Strategy Intelligence server resides on either a Windows or Linux operating system.
To set up Kerberos for use with SAP HANA and Strategy, see How to set up Kerberos for use with SAP HANA and MicroStrategy.

SSL Encryption

To set up SSL or TLS connection between Strategy clients and an SAP HANA server, see KB483476: How to configure SSL/TLS in MicroStrategy for SAP HANA.

LDAP Authentication

LDAP authentication is not supported by the driver bundled out of the box by the Strategy installer.
To configure LDAP authentication with SAP HANA, the system administrator needs to manually download (from SAP Launchpad) and install the SAP HANA Client, and follow the instructions in Managing LDAP Authentication.
