“The Intelligence Server name could not be resolved using the IPAddress. Please fix this before trying to connect” error message appears when attempting to connect to an Intelligence Server through MicroStrategy Web

SYMPTOM:

Administrators receive the following error message when attempting to connect to an Intelligence Server already defined via an IP address:

Error in the Administrator Page
<IP Address> The Intelligence Server name could not be resolved using the IPAddress. Please fix this before trying to connect.

CAUSE:

A possible cause of this issue is that the network is not configured to allow connected machines to recognize each others' IP addresses.

ACTION:

To resolve this issue, follow the steps below by first performing a quick test to verify the issue:

  1. On a Windows machine, go to Start > Run and enter "cmd.exe."
  2. This will bring up a prompt window. Type "ping <IP address of intelligence server>."
  3. If the action fails to receive an acknowledgment from the Intelligence Server machine, go to C:\WINNT\system32\drivers\etc.
  4. Edit the hosts file and add an entry such that <I-Server IP address > <IServer machine> is listed. Refer to the following Strategy Knowledge Base document for more information:
    • KB10177: How to manually resolve the web server name using the Windows hosts file
  5. Restart the Web Server machine for the changes to take effect.
  6. If necessary, perform Steps 1 - 5 on the Intelligence Server machine to have it recognize the Web Server machine's IP address.

Note: This is a simple way of setting up both machines to "talk" to each other. Users should always refer to the Network Administrator before making the changes.
