Is it possible to specify a location outside of the MicroStrategy Web deployment path where the log files can be saved when deployed on IBM WebSphere?

QUESTION:
Is it possible to specify a location outside of the Strategy Web Universal 9.x deployment path where the log files can be saved when deployed on IBM WebSphere?
ANSWER:
It is possible to specify a location outside of the deployment path. However the following pre-requisites must be met:

  1. The location must already exist on the system - if it does not create the necessary folder structure.
  2. Ensure that the account running the IBM WebSphere application server has write access to the location.

If both of the pre-requisites are met, then a change of the log file path can be accomplished. There are two methods by which this can be done:

Update the path via Strategy Web 9.x

  • In a web browser, open the Strategy Web 8.1.x and 9.x Administrator Page.
  • Click the link for Configuration under the Web Server > Diagnostics section on the left side menu.
  • Under Internal diagnostics setup, specify the desired full directory path, starting at the root directory, for the log files to be saved, as shown below:

Update the path directly on the web application server

  • Locate the logger.properties file. By default this is located under the deployment location in the WEB-INF/xml directory.
  • Edit the file and locate the line for the fileH.pattern property, as shown below:

  • Change the path to the desired location, as shown below:

  • Restart the web application server.
