KB19414: When refreshing a MicroStrategy Office workbook with multiple reports is slow, some reports occasionally timed out or randomly fail.

When refreshing a MicroStrategy Office workbook with multiple reports is slow, some reports occasionally timed out or randomly fail.

SYMPTOM:
When refreshing a Strategy Office workbook with multiple reports users see a notable decrease in performance, some reports occasionally timing out or randomly failing.

CAUSE:
Strategy Technical Support has seen this type of behavior when using IIS as the web server hosting Strategy Web Services and anonymous authentication has been enabled to access the Web Services virtual folder.

The Microsoft .Net Framework default configuration, anonymous enabled restricts simultaneous anonymous client connections as a security measure slowing down the process of refreshing the Strategy reports.

ACTION:
To resolve this problem, disable anonymous authentication for the StrategyWS virtual directory in IIS and use windows authentication instead. Doing this will be transparent to end users, the client application Microsoft Excel will communicate with IIS using windows authentication instead of creating an anonymous connection. Neither the user nor Strategy will be aware of this. Article KB9691: How to enable Windows Authentication for MicroStrategy Office in IIS.  can be used to accomplish this.

WORKAROUND:
If disabling anonymous authentication is not possible, there is also a workaround:

Edit ...\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\CONFIG\machine.config on the client machine and paste this whole section at the bottom of the file (i.e. before ):

<system.net> <connectionManagement> <add address="*" maxconnection="10" /> </connectionManagement> </system.net>

This will increase the number of simultaneous connections that can be created between the anonymous client and IIS.
