Summary:
This Technical Note describes the steps to simulate the pre- and post-execution SQL functionality that was available with Strategy Narrowcast. This functionality is not available in Distribution Services, but can be simulated with the use of other Strategy tools.
Description:
Strategy Narrowcast offered users the ability to define SQL statements to be executed before and after a service is executed. This was useful for modifying or checking certain criteria that relate to the service execution to these recipients. This functionality is not available in Distribution Services, however the effects can be simulated through the use of Alert triggered Subscriptions and post-report SQL statements.
Action:
Strategy Web offers the ability to create Alert based subscriptions, triggered by metric qualifications. Alert based subscriptions can be used as a more sophisticated version of a pre-SQL check, and it includes full analytical functionality available to Strategy reports.

This method provides greater functionality than Narrowcast pre-SQL checks, and is more intuitive.
The post-execution SQL that was available in Narrowcast can be replaced by implementing post-report SQL VLDB properties. This allows SQL to be run after the report execution, and is not tied to the subscription.
For more information regarding post statements defined at the report level, refer to the following Technical Note:
