With the introduction of database based History List, users may wish to migrate their Inbox files to a database based system. mstrhlmgtr, a utility introduced in MicroStrategy can be used to migrate Inbox files between file based and database based systems

INTRODUCTION
With the introduction of database based History List, users may wish to migrate their Inbox files to a database based system. mstrhlmgtr, a utility introduced in Strategy 9.x can be used to migrate Inbox files between file based and database based systems.
Note: The migration to history list database can also be performed from Strategy Configuration Wizard.
USAGE

mstrhlmgtr -i:inboxdirectory -n:DSN -u:userID -p:password

Option "-k" to keep old InBox files or DB contents after the migration
Option "-e" if the character set encoding of the repository is UTF8
EXAMPLE

mstrhlmgtr -i:/home/test/8.x_Inbox -n:Orion_History_List -u:UNAME -p:PASSWORD -l:C:\8.x_Inbox -k

Note: The complete path to the Inbox files must be specified for inboxdirectory as the tool does not have the ability to read sub-folders of the Inbox directory.
If the inboxdirectory path is not complete the users will see "Migration Completed" with number of Completed Files = 0.
The following steps must be performed to migrate Strategy Intelligence Server 9.x Inbox files from a file based system to a database based system in a Unix environment.

  • Stop the Intelligence Server
  • Open a terminal window and go to the location: <Strategy Home>/bin
  • At the command prompt, enter the following:

    mstrhlmgtr -i:/home/test/8.x_Inbox -n:Orion_History_List -u:UNAME -p:PASSWORD -l:C:\8.x_Inbox -k

  • The following result can be seen:

  • Notice that in Step 3, option -k was used. Because of this, the Inbox files were copied (not moved) to the database as seen in the DSSCSMSGINFO table:
Database Based Inbox Location - NEW LOCATION

  • File Based Inbox Location - ORIGINAL LOCATION

  • Now log into Strategy Developer and go under Administration tab. In Strategy 9.x, a History List Messages monitor was also introduced for the administrator to track all user's history list messages. The messages that were moved to the database in Step 5, can now be seen in this History List Messages monitor as seen below:
ka04W000000uG9dQAE_0EM440000002B9o.jpeg
  • Within the History folder under Strategy Tutorial project, users can find their respective messages from the ones moved to the database in Step 5.

Note: For the above History list messages to be useful and generate any data, their respective caches must exist on the same machine where the Inbox files are located (in the case of file based Inbox) otherwise upon requesting the History list message, users will see the following error message:
