KB320770: How to import data from Salesforce in MicroStrategy Desktop 10.x

Starting in Strategy Desktop 10.x, users can import reports from third-party Salesforce accounts to build Strategy and dashboards via the Data Import tool. Strategy Desktop version 10.x uses a different Salesforce API to interact with Salesforce account. This API requires that the Salesforce account is a developer account. The steps below are a simplified version of the steps in tech note KB248845 used to import data from Salesforce in Web.

A developer account in Salesforce
 
STEPS TO CONNECT TO SALESFORCE
Configuring the Salesforce account

  1. Log into the users Salesforce developer account through https://login.salesforce.com
  2. In the Salesforce account, add Strategy Web as a connected app.
  3. Navigate to Manage Users > Permission Sets > new > System Permissions and set the permission of the Strategy Web connected app to API Enabled.
  4. After the Strategy Web connected app is created, record the Consumer Key and Consumer Secret. This will be needed later.

 
Using Salesforce in Desktop

  1. Select Add New Data.
  2. Hover over Salesforce Reports and click on Set OAuth Parameters, like shown below:

  1. Enter the Consumer Key into the Client ID field, as well as the Consumer Secret into the Client Secret field.

  1. Back in the Add New Data window, select Salesforce Reports. Users without an existing session to Salesforce will be prompted to login with the right Salesforce credentials, like shown below:

  1. Upon login, users will be able to browse for Salesforce reports they would like to import into Strategy Desktop.
