• Strategy

Dropdown Selectors show as blank,  even when the "Automatically update when there is no data for the current selection" option is checked in MicroStrategy Web 9.0.x, as shown below

SYMPTOM:

Dropdown Selectors show as blank,  even when the "Automatically update when there is no data for the current selection" option is checked in Strategy Web 9.0.x, as shown below:

This issue can be seen when the target grid contains a view filter qualification.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
Follow the next steps to reproduce this issue in Strategy Tutorial Project:

  • Create a report with `Customer Region`, `Customer State`, `Customer City` and  `Customer` in the rows and    `Revenue` in the columns.
  • Insert the report created in step one in a Report Services Document.
  • Create three  panel stacks inside the  document.
  • Create four Dropdown selectors for `Customer Region`, `Customer State`, `Customer City`, `Customer`, as shown in the image below:

  • Add the grid created in step one into the document  with formatting
  • Select the three panel stacks (created in step 3) and grid in step 5 as target for the `Customer Region` selector, as shown below:

  • Select the second and third  panel stacks from step 3 and the grid object created in step 5 as target for `Customer State` selector as shown in the image below.

  • Select the third panel stack from step 3 and the grid from step 5 as target for the `Customer City` Selector as shown below.

  • Select the grid  as target for the `Customer` selector.

  • Make sure that all the selectors have the `Automatically update when there is no data for the current selection` and  `Show option for All` checked.
  • Change the view of the document to `Editable Mode`.
  • Select an element of customer region from the available selections. In this example, 'Northeast'. Note that the grid and additional selectors are updated as expected.

  • Right click on the grid object created in step 5  and select  Edit View filter .
  • Create a view filter  condition to use certain  'Customer State' elements as shown below.

  • When attempting to change the selection for the 'Customer Region' selector, all other selectors will now display blank
    as shown below:

CAUSE:

This issue is actually caused by a design flaw while creating the dashboard.

ACTION:

Refer to the following technical note for more information KB33862 - How to create nested or cascading selectors and avoid getting blank selections in several versions of MicroStrategy Web 8.1.x and 9.x .
