KB34224: How to prevent MicroStrategy Server from becoming deactivated due to VPN software assigning dynamic MAC addresses on a Windows machine?

Community Admin

• Strategy

SYMPTOM:
On a Windows machine where VPN software is assigning dynamic MAC addresses, Strategy will be required to be re-activated after restarting the machine.
CAUSE:
After the machine has been restarted one of several Strategy components will scan the machine's hardware configuration to see if the MAC address used during the activation is present. If it is not, the installation will deactivate. With some VPN software, the MAC address will be changed each time the machine is restarted causing the installation to be deactivated.
Please refer to the following Strategy Knowledge Base technical note below for more details on server activation:
KB14333: What are the circumstances under which MicroStrategy Server Activation is required?
ACTION:
With the VPN devices viewing them through the "Network Connections" menu through the "Control Panel" is not possible and will only show the physical devices. Enabling the MAQueryEnvironment trace will help find the exact name that the VPN device that the MAC address is being changed. To prevent this from happening in the future, follow the steps below to disable the VPN device.

  • Shut down the Intelligence Server.
  • Disable all network adapters except for the one going to be used for activating the Strategy Server products.
  • In the Strategy Diagnostics and Configuration Tool, enable all items under the MAQueryEnvironment.

  • Start the Intelligence Server
  • Open the DSSErrors.log file and look for entries similar to the ones below shortly after the Intelligence Server has started
    • Adapter "VPN Device Name": 00:00:00:00:00:00
    • Make a note of the "VPN Device Name" because this will be used in one of the later steps. This particular name is just a test name, but it varies from machine to machine and the VPN software used.
  • Go to the following link to download a free tool to disable the VPN device through the Windows Command Prompt
    •  http://www.novell.com/communities/node/2338/network-configuration-command-line-control
    • Download the file called: netshx.zip
  • Unzip the downloaded file. There should be a total of 4 files: Netsh.exe, DevCon.exe, SandRW.exe & netshx.
  • Open the Windows Command Prompt (cmd) and browse to the location where the files were unzipped
  • Run the following command
    • netshx disable "VPN Device Name"

  • After the command has been run, a confirmation will appear letting you know that the device has successfully been deactivated

  • Now activate the Intelligence Server with only the network device used to activate and will always be available enabled.
  • Then re-enable the VPN device by running the following command.
    • netshx enable "VPN Device Name"
  • After this has been enabled, rebooting the machine will not be automatically deactivated.
