After unintentionally performing a batch import or any other import method which has imported a large number of users into the Strategy environment, what methods can be used to revert the changes caused by the issue?
Two methods can be utilized to remove the users that were imported accidentally:
- Metadata Database Backup Restore:
Perform a restore of the Metadata database from a recent backup, and perform a roll-back to before the import occurred. This method ensures that the imported users will not exist. However, this also entails losing all changes and progress made to the environment between the time the restore is performed to when the backup of the database was performed.
- Remove users based on creation date:
This method may be preferred, but if other users were imported or created in the same time frame, they may be deleted as well. Viewing users based on "Creation Date" in a list form is not a feature of the User Manager, and thus there exist two methods to get around this:
- A workaround is defined to view users by creation date by using Command Manager in the following Strategy Knowledge Base technical note:
KB35377: The column Creation Time does not show in User Manager in MicroStrategy Developer
This allows for a list of all the users based on creation time, and with the proper Strategy Command Manager script, users in a certain time frame can be removed. However, there is not an out-of-the-box Command Manager script to perform the delete based on creation date, and such a script to automate this is beyond the scope of Strategy Technical Support
- View the users in the Strategy Desktop interface and filter them based on their creation date. This is shown in the following Strategy KnowledgeBase technical note:
KB42920: The "Creation Time" column in the User Manager does not appear in MicroStrategy Developer
This would help with viewing the users in the Strategy Developer interface with the creation time criteria. Additionally, this method allows the selection of more than one user at a time and to perform deletions. However, based on the number of users that require deletion, this still may be a time consuming task.
