KB441080: Unique constraint violated error seen while attempting to edit a Subscription Set in Narrowcast Server connected to an Object Repository hosted on Oracle

This document discusses an error seen while editing a Subscription Set in Narrowcast. One possible cause is suggested, along with a workaround.

SYMPTOM
When attempting to add a user in a Static Subscription Set Editor in a Narrowcast System where the Object Repository is on Oracle, the following error may be encountered:

Error type: Odbc error. Odbc operation attempted: SQLExecDirect. [23000:1: on SQLHANDLE] [Strategy][ODBC Oracle Wire Protocol driver][Oracle]ORA-00001: unique constraint ([table name]) violated

CAUSE
One possible cause of this issue is if the subscription sequence used by the Narrowcast Object Repository becomes misaligned, causing a constraint violation when a new entry is attempted.
The administrator can verify if this is the case by seeing if the following two queries run against the Object Repository return the same value:

SELECT MSTRSEQSUBID.NextVal
FROM DUAL;

SELECT MSTRSEQSUBID.CurrVal
FROM DUAL;

WORKAROUND
Use the Copy Repository tool to copy the Subscription Book Repository to a new database schema. This should re-set the sequence.
Information on the Copy Repository tool can be found in this KB article: KB12409: Copy Repository Tool functionality in MicroStrategy Narrowcast Server 9.x - 10.x
While copying the repository with the tool, be sure to select the "User preferences", "Authentication and security", and "Subscriptions" options per the following KB article: KB44719: After performing a copy repository, subscription sets within services are empty even though the subscription book was also copied in MicroStrategy Narrowcast 9.x
After copying the Subscription Book Repository, the administrator should edit the Narrowcast System Configuration to point to the new Subscription Book Repository.
