KB441389: MicroStrategy Intelligence Server 10.5-10.10 running on Windows Servers fail to start with error "Faulting module name: SHSMP64.dll, version: xxxx" after installing Windows Update KB4284863 , KB4338815 or KB4462926

This document describes an issue that can be encountered with MicroStrategy versions 10.5-10.10 where the Intelligence Server cannot be started after applying Windows update KB4338815, KB4338815 or KB4462926. A code fix to resolve this issue is also supplied.

Starting with the release of Strategy ONE (March 2024), dossiers are also known as dashboards.
SYMPTOM
Strategy Intelligence Server 10.5 - 10.10 installed on Windows Server 2012 R2 cannot be started with an error as shown below after installing Windows Update KB4338815, KB4338815 or KB4462926

Failed to start service
Unexpected error occurred. The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

Windows Event Viewer log shows the following error. The version of the DLL could be different based on the specific Strategy version. The following error is seen with Strategy version 10.10:

Faulting application name: MSTRSvr2_64.exe, version: 10.10.46.16,time stamp: 
Faulting module name: SHSMP64.dll, version: 9.0.2.256, time stamp;xxxxxxxxxxxx
Exception code: 0xc0000005

CAUSE
This issue is caused because of a conflict of the above DLL with specific Windows Updates (KB4338815, KB4284863, KB4462926).  For details regarding the Windows Updates, refer to the link below:

ACTION
This issue has been fixed in Strategy version 10.11. Upgrade to this version to take advantage of the fix.
If it is not feasible to upgrade, a targeted code fix can be applied to the Strategy Intelligence Server. This code fix can be applied on Strategy Intelligence Server version 10.5 - 10.10 and is available for download via this Community Article (see the end of document).  A readme for this patch is also available in the attached compressed file. 
Note: For users running Strategy version 10.10, the code fix should be applied after applying 10.10 Global  Patch 6 as mentioned in the Readme. That particular patch can be downloaded from the following Strategy Community article:

WORKAROUND
Since this Windows update is a Security update, if the organization's security team gives the approval to uninstall this update, go to Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features > View Installed Updates, and roll back the Windows Update. For example, KB4338815, as highlighted below:
