valuePromptAnswers issue when passing multiple prompt answers to target Document or Report

This Knowledgebase Article describes an issue when trying to pass multiple prompt answers using URL API parameter valuePromptAnswers and using the caret ^ special character to separate those multiple answers.

Description

When the Strategy user tries to pass multiple prompt answers using valuePromptAnswers URL API parameter, and begins separating them using the caret character as shown in KB15734, errors ensue. When using this separation "caret", users either view only one value being answered or errors when executing the target document or report.
Example for reference (^North):
http://localhost/MicroStrategy/asp/Main.aspx?Server={&SERVERNAME}&Project={&PROJECT}&Port=0&evt=4001&src=Main.aspx.4001&reportViewMode=1&reportID=17523F404E2A36C1F7BD728C51EB5DEF&valuePromptAnswers=1^North

Steps to reproduce

  1. Create an URL to pass multiple prompt answers to either a Document or a Report.
  2. Use the caret character to separate those answers as stated in the section above.
  3. Note the errors when executing the target document or report.

Why is this happening?

This is working as designed in Strategy Web. The results is due to that that the caret character is outside the ASCII set therefore, it needs to be encoded to ASCII.

Solution

Refer to the Web SDK guide that recommends encoding "^" in the URL using "%5E".
Using this SDK guide will allow you to avoid all errors by encoding to the ASCII.
