KB442533: Best practice to split large files in Linux Operating Systems for MicroStrategy Technical Support

Edgar Garcia Rosas

Senior Technical Account Manager I • MicroStrategy

SUMMARY
In particular occasions, it might be necessary to provide to Strategy Technical Support of large files such as metadata repositories, core files, etc. This article is with the purpose to standardize the procedure of splitting such large files using the same method.
RECOMMENDED METHOD
For the split of a large file, the number of chunks to be created will depend upon the total size of the file, and if your department/company/institution has a limit of file size submission per day at least, more restrictions might be applied to it.
As an example we will use the situation of a generated core file; we do recommend splitting the particular core file after compressing it:
1.-The user must determine the number of chunk files by dividing Total_Size/40GB = #_files_to_split.
2.-To compress files in Linux Operating Systems, please do use GZIP (file extension .gz) because we want the files to be usable on any Unix/Linux system, for example:

$ gzip core.MSTRSvr_PID

The file is compressed and saved as core.MSTRSvr_PID.gz
3.-Continue with this example; we can hypothetically have a core file core.MSTRSvr_PID.gz after compression it size is 312GB, then applying the formula; 312GB/40GB= 7.8, and size we cannot use fractions let set to 9 chunks.
4.-For splitting a file, there are several approaches, but please do use the following:

$ split -n9 -e --verbose core.MSTRSvr_PID.gz

-e: to avoid zero sized chunks.
--verbose: get a diagnostic message each time a new split file is getting created.
5.-On regards of where to submit the file or the files after the above process have been completed (if necessary), Strategy Technical Support will provide in a case by case basis the appropriate medium to submit by the files from one of the following options:
A)LiquidFiles, FTP and SFTP.
KB484021 : How to provide files to Technical Support using the SFTP site
B)In other cases, it might be requested to submit to the particular Customer Folder with Strategy.
C)HIPAA.
KB44789 : Support for HIPAA Covered Entities with Business Associate Agreements
