The option to add a new card is grayed out in MicroStrategy Workstation 2019

Monica Gallegos Salazar

Principal Product Specialist • MicroStrategy

Is the "Cards" option grayed out on Workstation? No worries. Read on to get the answer you need! The given solution for this issue is available in the current document. Note that the impact is limited to MicroStrategy Workstation 2019 and above. This issue has been classified as a defect by MicroStrategy.

Troubleshooting
The option to add a new card is grayed out in Strategy Workstation 2019
Within Strategy 2019, some of our users have been experiencing a grayed out "+" icon when attempting to add a new HyperIntelligence card in Workstation. Once a connection to an environment has been established in Strategy Workstation 2019, the option to add a new card appears to be grayed out as shown below:

ka02R000000kdwnQAA_0EM44000000RhV4.jpeg

Steps to reproduce

  1. In Strategy Workstation 2019, connect to an environment that was upgraded from a previous version to 2019.
  2. Try to create a new card. Notice that the option to do so is grayed out.

Why is this happening?
The cards feature is part of MicroStrategy Hyperintelligence, which is a new feature in Strategy 2019. One of the possible causes of this issue is that Strategy Workstation 2019 is connecting to an older version of Strategy Library. To determine the version of Strategy Library, run the following URL:

http://<ServerName>:8080/MicroStrategyLibrary/api/status

Note: Modify <ServerName> to the Web server where Strategy Library is deployed.
If the Strategy Library version shows older than version 2019, you will see a result such as the example below. Notice the "webVersion" field, which refers to the Strategy Library version:

{
    "upSince": 1546016963519,
    "upTime": 598234966,
    "upTimeText": "166 Hours 10 Minutes 34 seconds",
    "webVersion": "11.0.0.20481J",
    "baseUri": "http://<ServerName>:8080/MicroStrategyLibrary/api/",
    "iServerVersion": "11.1.0000.25274"
}

To explain why the Strategy Library version is still at a previous version after the upgrade to Strategy 2019, refer to the following MicroStrategy Upgrade Guide, which states:
"In Strategy 10.9 through 11.0, Strategy Library was automatically deployed in Tomcat. Starting in 2019, administrators are no longer prompted with the Tomcat directory and can deploy the WAR file to the JEE server of choice."
This means that administrators must manually deploy the Strategy 2019 WAR file for Library in order to successfully upgrade.
Status
ACKNOWLEDGED   IN-PROGRESS   SOLVED   (Version: Strategy 2019)
Next Steps
Deploy the Strategy Library 2019 WAR file in the application server where it is being used.
