KB46429: A column with all zero or null values is not hidden by the "Hide Nulls/Zeros" feature in MicroStrategy Web.

Community Admin

• Strategy

In MicroStrategy Web 9.4.1 the feature "Hide Nulls/Zeros" was introduced to allow users to hide null values as a quick view filter. However, if the report contains two metrics, one of which does not contain any zeros or null values, even when the other column is returning all zero or null values, will not hide the metric column, as shown below.

SYMPTOM:
In Strategy Web 9.4.1 the feature "Hide Nulls/Zeros" was introduced to allow users to hide null values as a quick view filter. However, if the report contains two metrics, one of which does not contain any zeros or null values, even when the other column is returning all zero or null values, will not hide the metric column, as shown below.

Hide Nulls/Zeros has been enabled:

Note: For a similar issue, refer to tech note KB46104: In MicroStrategy Web 9.4.1 - 10.x, the data option "Hide Nulls/Zeros" does not work when subtotals are enabled on the report .

STEPS TO REPRODUCE

  • Create a report with the "Center Analysis" Template.
  • Create a new Derived Metric with the formula of - and name it Zeros.
  • Place Call Center and Zero on the report.
  • Enable the Hide Nulls/Zeros option, as shown below.

  •  Run report and note that no results were returned as the metric column was correctly hidden.

    Sample Code/Error
No data returned for this view. This might be because the applied filter excludes all data.

  • Add the Cost metric to the report and run it again.  Note that the Zero column is not hidden.

CAUSE:
This is working as designed in Strategy Web 9.4.1 and above. When the "Hide Nulls/Zeros" feature is turned on, a quick view-filter-like decision is made to hide the row with the null value or zero. However, when that same row contains data for other metrics, the decision is to not hide the row, as the user might still want to see the values for the other columns that do return data. This decision is made at the row level, for each row containing a null or a zero. When an entire column is based of nulls or zeros, the expectation would be to hide the column instead of the each individual row, but this is not how the feature was originally designed.

ACTION:
This functionality has now been enhanced. In Strategy Web 10.8, functionality was added to hide entire subtotal rows and columns. In Strategy Web 10.9, the implementation was expanded to include individual rows and columns.

WORKAROUND:
The column width of the metric can be manually adjusted to hide it.
