KB46647: "Semget failed: system limit of maximum number semaphores is exceeded" error message appears in the DSSErrors log when reports failed on an AIX operating system

This knowlege base article documents an issue which is caused by a memory leak in the ODBC Driver Manager. This issue is limited to Intelligence Servers running on AIX operating systems and for only 9.4.1. This error should not be occurring as AIX is the only UNIX OS that dynamically changes its semaphore limit based on usage--the limit should not be reached. Other Linux/UNIX OS's have a hardcoded limit (i.e. RHEL, Ubuntu).

Reports are not able to be successfully executed (both interactive and subscriptions) and the Intelligence Server is experiencing memory leaks. The DSSErrors log is filled up with errors as shown below:


2014-03-03 07:01:08.208-05:00 Database error <1>: Connection::Connect failed. Unable to connect.
Error type: System call error. semget failed: system limit of maximum number semaphores is exceeded
System Error (ENOSPC): --- No space left on device.

In some cases, the following error pops up on the console:


Error: Port Library failed to initialize. Could not create the Java virtual machine

CAUSE
This is a known issue in Strategy Analytics Enterprise 9.4.1.

ACTION
This issue has been fixed in Strategy 9.4.1 Hotfix 6 and newer. Upgrade to this version to take advantage of the fix.

WORKAROUND
Restarting the Strategy Intelligence Server will temporarily resolve the issue.
