KB47716: "MicroStrategy 9.4 ® Common Files has stopped working" or "Find target process dead while sending a message" error thrown when using Hive 0.11 in MicroStrategy 9.4.1 with the MicroStrategy ODBC Driver for Apache Hive Wire Protocol

In MicroStrategy 9.4.1, when using the out-of-the-box MicroStrategy ODBC Driver for Apache Hive Wire Protocol to connect to a Hive 0.11 or later database using MicroStrategy DB Query Tool, users may encounter the following error: "MicroStrategy 9.4 ® Common Files has stopped working..."

SYMPTOM
In Strategy 9.4.1, when using the out-of-the-box Strategy ODBC Driver for Apache Hive Wire Protocol to connect to a Hive 0.11 or later database using Strategy DB Query Tool, users may encounter the following error:

In addition to the above, users are thrown an error in Warehouse Catalog when trying to access tables from the database instance using that DSN:


An error was detected while trying to read the warehouse catalog: Database error <>: Unknown failed. 
Unable to connect. Error type: System call error. Error communicating with connection process. 
Find target process dead while sending a message.

There are no issues observed when running a test connection.
CAUSE
Hive 0.11 and later are not certified as databases for use with Strategy 9.4.1 using the Strategy ODBC Driver for Apache Hive Wire Protocol which is shipped out of the box (driver version 7.10.01.80). Consult the following Knowledge Base document for more information:

ACTION
If running Hortonworks HDP 1.3 with Hive 0.11, use the certified Hortonworks driver. Certification information can be found in the 9.4.1 readme under Certified and Supported Configurations.
A driver update is available for the Strategy ODBC Driver for Apache Hive Wire Protocol to be able to connect to Hive 0.12. Contact Strategy Technical Support for additional information. Refer to the following Strategy Knowledge Base document for additional information.
