KB47735: How to deploy MicroStrategy Web Analytics Enterprise in Red Hat JBoss 6.x EAP

Community Admin

• Strategy

Strategy Analytics Enterprise is certified and supported in several versions of Red Hat JBoss. This guide will consider the latest versions available:
Strategy Analytics Enterprise 9.4.1 HF4 (and later) and JBoss 6.2 post-certified in Hotfix 3. For more information refer to KB47085 Post-Certification - JBoss Application Server 6.2.0 is supported for MicroStrategy Analytics Enterprise 9.4.1 Hotfix 3 or above.

PREREQUISITES

  • A valid Strategy Analytics Enterprise 9.4.1 HF4 (and later) installation with Strategy Web JSP installed as a component.
  • Download JBoss 6.2 EAP from the official site: http://jbossas.jboss.org/downloads/
  • 7-Zip, WinRar or any tool to uncompress a WAR file

DEPLOYING JBOSS

Red Hat JBoss can be used in Stand Alone mode or Domain mode for multiple servers. In this Technical Note only Stand Alone deployments will be covered. For more information refer to the Red Hat JBoss manual.

  1. Unzip the JBoss Installation directory in a desired location typically:

  2.
    C:\Program Files\jboss-eap-6.2

  3. In Microsoft Windows open a Command Prompt and navigate to the "bin" directory inside the folder defined in step 1
Alternatively, in Linux systems open a shell and navigate to the defined folder.

  4. To add an administrator for the Strategy Web Administrator page follow the steps in KB45102: Authentication required when accessing the MicroStrategy Web Administrator page in MicroStrategy Web Universal 9.3.1 in JBoss Enterprise Application Platform 6.0.1 running on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.4

  5. In the bin folder in step 2, execute the following batch or bash script depending on the Operating System:

    standalone.bat
    standalone.sh

DEPLOYING Strategy WEB

There are two ways to deploy Strategy Web 9.4.1 (and later) in a JBoss Application server:

  1. Packaged WAR file: In this mode a WAR file is not exploded and all the files used by the application are kept in a Virtual File System in the temporary memory of the application server. Restarting the server will not save any file changes and will create a new VFS for the application.
  2. Unpackaged WAR file: In this mode the WAR file is expanded by the user and deployed directly in the server. Files can be modified in this deployment and changes are kept after a server restart.

In this Technical Note, only the Unpackaged WAR file mode will be addressed. For more information on the Packaged WAR file mode refer to Red Hat JBoss documentation. Note: JBoss has to be running for these steps to be executed correctly, step 4 of the previous section covers how to start the application server.

  1. Locate the Strategy Web Analytics Enterprise WAR file on a Strategy Installation typically:

    C:\Program Files (x86)\MicroStrategy\Web JSP

  2. Use an unarchiver tool such as 7-Zip to unpackage this WAR file into a folder with a name similar to the one shown below:

    Strategy941HF4.WAR

  3. Move this folder to the deployments folder for this standalone server typically:

    jboss-eap-6.2\standalone\deployments

  4. Create an empty text file with the same name as the expanded WAR folder adding also the.dodeploy extension as shown below:

    Strategy941HF4.WAR.dodeploy

  5. If no changes were made to the hot deploy settings for JBoss the WAR file will start creating the context for the application. The progress can be monitored in the JBoss console or in the server.log typically:

    jboss-eap-6.2\standalone\log

  6. Strategy should be functional in port 8080 in a URL similar to the one below:
    http://localhost:8080/MicroStrategy941HF4/servlet/mstrWeb

THIRD PARTY WARNING: Red Hat JBoss is not a Strategy product if more information is required on deployment details refer to the application server manuals.
