KB47760: In MicroStrategy Intelligence Server, poor performance is seen when fetching data from Hive using the Cloudera ODBC v2.0 driver

This Knowledge Base document describes a performance issue in MicroStrategy Intelligence Server 9.x which may be observed when fetching data from Hive using the Cloudera ODBC v2.0 driver.

SYMPTOM
In Strategy Intelligence Server 9.x, poor performance is seen when fetching data from Hive using the Cloudera ODBC v2.0 driver. The Cloudera v2.0 driver is certified for use on Strategy Intelligence Server 9.3.x and 9.4.x running on Windows and Linux operating systems.
It is verified that the issue is not specific to any data types and that the issue from KB47759 is not applicable.
This issue may be more pronouncedly seen when fetching large result sets from Hive. Also, it is verified that the 'extended fetch' option has been checked on the database connection object within the database instance, as shown below.

CAUSE
This is a known behavior with the Cloudera v2.0 ODBC driver. The v2.0 driver does not support the extended fetch call and retrieves one row of data at a time. Because of this, the data fetching process can be slow and can be exacerbated in environments where the network transfer rate is poor.

ACTION
Switch to using the Cloudera ODBC v2.5 driver which is certified for Strategy Analytics Enterprise 9.4.1. Refer to the following Strategy Knowledge Base document for additional information:

KB46881 : Certification of Cloudera v2.5 drivers to connect to Cloudera CDH 4.x in Strategy Analytics Enterprise 9.4.1
